Liz Kessler is better known for her 'Emily Windsnap, Mermaid Stories', but her latest book is a departure from this.

'When the World was ours' is a very different story, and for Holocaust Memorial day 2022 Year 8 students joined Liz for an online zoom event and discussion in our library.

In a moving and powerful presentation, Liz explained the motivations behind writing the story of three friends, Leo, Elsa and Max, whose paths take very different turns during the war.

Liz’s own family history has inspired the story, with her Father’s family escaping the Holocaust, saved due to a chance encounter with an English couple. Her research also took her to Auschwitz, where she found her own Great Aunt Elsa’s name in the book of remembrance.

“You could have heard a pin drop during the session” said Ms Hockey, School Librarian.

“it felt like history was coming to life through the experience of Liz’s family and such an important story to be told.”

Copies of 'When the World was ours' are available in our school library.
