“Art is not a mirror held up to reality but a hammer with which to shape it.”
- Bertolt Brecht
In an ever changing world, drama and theatre offer the stability and creative opportunity to explore and discover in a safe and supportive environment. Studying current and historical events inspires us to develop our local, national and global responsibility, prompting emotional intelligence, resilience, empathy and a strong social conscience. Our students work as a drama family, they care for and support each other as they are challenged with provocative themes and questions. The centre of our ethos is that exploration through drama and theatre educates, promotes and empowers change, an ethos that is ever more important in fractious times. Drama helps develop creative, invested and passionate young people who recognise how theatre can be used to create positive change.
Drama students at Chorlton High School have the privilege of working with a strong and passionate team of very experienced teachers. They will explore style and genre as well as developing their own acting skills through many practical performances while studying the AQA syllabus. Reviewing live theatre performances in order to develop analytical and evaluative understanding helps students expand their own opinions and can even challenge prejudice. Students become skilled at breaking down theatre to create meaning and subtext which then empowers their own practical performances.
It is our intention to use our subject to develop our students' understanding of the world that they live in and in turn, develop their emotional intelligence, empathy and their social conscience. We work together as a drama family to support each other whilst exploring challenging questions and themes. The centre of our ethos is exploration, and our knowledge that theatre has the power to create positive changes in the world. Over the course of their drama education, students will work on their acting skills as well as their knowledge of creating and reviewing live theatre.
Chorlton High is a Platinum Arts Mark school, and this is due to the exceptional Arts education that your child will receive during their time here.
We are proud of the work that our students produce and take every opportunity to share this with friends and family. We stage a professional standard Key Stage 3 school play every year which all are welcome to join! We also put on performances of our Key Stage 4 examination plays in our excellent Blue Box Theatre.
We encourage our students to watch live theatre whenever possible and arrange numerous trips for them to theatre such as The Lowry and The Royal Exchange. Theatre companies also regularly visit our school with their inspirational performances.
We are proud of our curriculum and have spent time developing schemes of work which are challenging and engaging for students from all backgrounds. Not only do we study plays, students write and stage their own performances.
Throughout lockdown we produced and staged a number of student led performances. These showcased not only our students’ immense artistic talents, but also their drive to create art even when they are away from the classroom.
