Image of LGBTQ+ History Month 2022

2022 sees the 50th anniversary of the very first Pride March in the UK in 1972.

To celebrate this, we have encouraged our students to look at, discuss and think about the ‘'hidden LGBTQ+ heroes'’ embedded within our school curriculum and throughout our learning resources.

Wilfred Owen

“All a poet can do today is warn."

Wilfred Owen was a war poet who served in the First World War; his experiences on the field led not only to mental illness but also to some truly evocative, anti-war poetry and a romance with fellow poet, Siegfried Sassoon.

Jackie Shane

"I have never felt that I had to change or do anything that wasn't natural to me. I will never ever be some kind of wishy-washy creature that pretends or lets others guide me. I guide my life. It is mine. No matter what anyone says, I'm going to be Jackie."

Jackie Shane was an American soul and rhythm and blues singer, who was most prominent in the local music scene of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in the 1960s. Considered to be a pioneer transgender performer.

Sara Josephine Baker

Baker took up medical studies at a young age when her father died of Typhoid Fever. At the time, it was believed that medicine was an unsuitable area of study for a girl, but Baker was stubborn.

Baker set up a series of neighbourhood health stations targeting families, and particularly those with new-borns. Her accomplishments were ground-breaking. It is believed that her ideas and efforts saved thousands of lives and revolutionised the approach to public health services and the relationship between health and hygiene.

Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette

From her birth in 1873 in Burgundy until she died in 1954 in the heart of Paris, Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette lived many lives. Celebrated bisexual writer of around 80 works, journalist, and reviewer; music-hall star; even beautician. Colette is perhaps best known for living precisely as she pleased.
