Pupil Premium and Recovery Premium at Chorlton High School
At Chorlton High School, we are committed to ensuring that every young person is supported to achieve their full potential—academically, socially, and emotionally. As a truly comprehensive school, we proudly serve a diverse community and recognise the richness that comes from our students varied socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
Our Pupil Premium strategy is driven by our belief in Excellence, Equity and Ethos, and reflects our core values: Successful, Creative and Happy. We work closely with families, staff and students to inspire aspiration and deliver the very best education and outcomes for all.
We know that some students face additional barriers, and our inclusive approach ensures that no child is left behind and we focus on equalising starting points. Our strategy is built around our CARE approach:
- Community of Belonging: Every student is seen, valued and celebrated. Our inclusive curriculum reflects the diversity of our school, and events like Belonging Days, the Beelong Festival, and Character Awards help students feel proud of their identity and connected to our school community.
- Attendance: We understand the link between attendance and achievement. Through mentoring, rewards, and wellbeing support, we’ve reduced persistent absence and now rank in the top 20% nationally for FSM attendance.
- Reading and Literacy: Literacy is central to success. Our reading strategy is grounded in diagnostic assessment and disciplinary literacy, with targeted interventions supporting those who need it most.
- Effective Learning Behaviours: We teach students how to learn. Our CHS Scholar Habits and Conduct Curriculum promote self-regulation, effort and engagement. Students are supported through adaptive teaching, and inclusive classroom routines.
- We also prioritise cultural enrichment and aspiration. Every Pupil Premium student takes part in careers events, leadership programmes, and enrichment activities—from theatre trips to workshops—ensuring they build the cultural capital needed to thrive.
- Our approach is evidence-informed, responsive, and constantly evolving. We use robust systems to track progress and adapt support. Staff engage in high-quality professional development to ensure inclusive teaching is at the heart of every classroom.
- “Teachers really care about us. They help us believe we can do well, even when things are hard at home.” – Year 10 student
- “I’d never been to a theatre before. It made me feel like I belonged in places I didn’t think were for me.” – Year 8 student
- Impact Highlights:
- Attainment for disadvantaged students is rising, with GCSE results showing performance above national averages in key subjects.
- Attendance and engagement are strong, with targeted support making a measurable difference.
- Student voice confirms that our inclusive culture and high expectations help students feel safe, supported, and ambitious.
We are proud of our journey and remain resolute in our mission to equalise starting points and ensure that every child at Chorlton High School has the opportunity to be successful, creative and happy.
