CHS Scholar

‘CHS Scholar’ is how the school explicitly teach learning behaviours to students. Our incredibly successful scholar drive sets out the habits and routines of effective learners who actively pursue academic success.

We wanted to share some ‘scholar good news’ with parents.

  • We have just had a record-breaking set of GCSE Results – placing us significantly above national average and in the top 20% of schools nationally for achievement across every single measure.
  • 172 students achieved grades 7-9. 32% of all grades achieved were at grades 7-9. This is considerably above national average.
  • 81 students (27%) achieved at least one Grade 9 – this is awarded to just 5% of students nationally – meaning substantially more of our Scholars achieve at the very highest level.
  • Over 92% of our students receive teacher-nominated scholar certificates each half term. Everyone has the opportunity to become a CHS Scholar!
  • Over the next 2 weeks, we have our Scholar Showcase – where students bring their books to ‘show and tell’ in the Dining Room at breaktime on Thursdays and can receive postcards and badges for scholarly habits in books.

This half term, we have been driving 3 key scholar habits. We would really appreciate you emphasising the importance of these habits to students.

ATTENTION: Attention is the single most important factor in learning – without good attention, students cannot take in new information. Students are encouraged to be STARs in lesson – who Sit up straight, Track the speaker, Ask and answer questions and show Respect to others.

ORGANISE: Students are encouraged to really take pride in their exercise books – they should show excellent organisation in how they organise their work and put 100% effort and pride into all of their learning. We encourage students to use their contents page, glossary and key knowledge box to organise learning so that their book becomes their ultimate revision guide!

TALK: Effective TALK is a lifelong skill. It can improve wellbeing, relationships and academic performance. We emphasise the importance of speaking and listening, we encourage students to talk using our TALK protocols – like subject specific vocabulary, pitch, volume etc. and show effective listening with eye contact, head nodding and smiling to build trust. We know TALK is hard for some learners, so we use adjustments and support to ensure that everyone can participate in TALK.

Inclusive Classrooms

We truly believe in inclusive classrooms – where all of our scholars can exceed their potential. Mixed grouping is the norm at Chorlton High School and has been for many years, and we believe this model contributes heavily to our academic success. In our classrooms – everyone belongs and everyone has a voice. As students enter their personalised GCSE pathways, they will be in more focused groups in English, Maths and Science. Maths also has some broad tiering across the five years, to support a wide range of mathematical ability. Our Year 11 leavers were taught in mixed groups in Key Stage 3, and they have just secured the best results in the school’s history.
