THE POWER OF PEER SUPPORT: READING BUDDIES IN ACTION
We are incredibly proud to highlight a wonderful initiative taking place in our school library during form time: our Reading Buddies programme.
This heartwarming scheme sees our Year 9 Reading Ambassadors stepping up as mentors, sharing their love of reading and actively supporting our younger learners. Our school library has become a hub of collaborative learning and a powerful example of our 'Community of Belonging' in action, promoting connections and reinforcing the vital importance of literacy across all year groups.
Each Thursday form time, older students are paired with younger readers, providing individualised attention and encouragement. They demonstrate incredible Motivation and Responsibility, applying their 'Collaborate and Communicate' SCHOLAR skills as they guide their younger peers. Our young readers, in turn, benefit from personalised support and a positive peer role model, which significantly boosts their Confidence and Curiosity in reading.
This programme highlights the impressive power of peer mentorship, moving beyond improving reading skills into advocacy for relationship building and nurturing a shared love for communal stories and storytelling.
‘It’s been great to see everyone meeting their reading buddy and to see some of the wonderful reading that is going on’ said Ms Hockey, Chorlton High Librarian.
